The Lineage of Clan Fraser
The proud history of the Frasers is anchored by two noble branches, each carving out a distinct and powerful legacy in Scottish history.
The Senior Line
Descending from Sir Alexander Fraser, a crucial ally who fought alongside Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The Philorth line is deeply woven into Scotland’s independence, with Sir Alexander’s seal appearing on the historic 1320 Declaration of Arbroath. In 1592, the 8th Laird founded the town of Fraserburgh. Today, the senior line continues under the guidance of Katharine Fraser, 22nd Lady Saltoun.
The Highland Path
Descending from Sir Simon Fraser, the Lovat branch established its deep roots in the rugged highlands of Stratherrick and the church lands of Beauly Priory. Known throughout history for their fierce independence and strategic alliances, their chiefs came to be known as "MacShimi." Despite forfeiture and trials following the Jacobite risings, the title was restored in the 19th century. Today, the lineage is led by Simon Fraser, 18th Lord Lovat and 25th MacShimi.

For many, the journey to Clan Fraser begins with the pages of fiction, but the roots are entirely real. The globally acclaimed Outlander book and television series by Sony Pictures are deeply anchored in the authentic, battlefield history of the Lovat Frasers.
